Pisa: the most overrated city in Italy

When people think about visiting Italy, places like the Colosseum, Venice, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa are immediately on their list of must-see places. I’m here to tell you to think again… Sure, you should definitely pay a visit to the Colosseum and the city of Rome solely because of its immense amount of history . And Venice, why not? Explore its canals and get lost in its little nooks and crannies. But, Pisa? The Leaning Tower of Pisa is pretty much the only thing to see there. You can also pay an amount that isn’t worth it to climb the steps of the Leaning Tower, and read about how one mistake led to a fancy landmark. Sure, there’s the Duomo, the fact that you can make fun of people taking crazy pictures, and you can be that crazy person taking dozens of pictures (guilty), but other than that, nada.

If you want to explore a cool little town near Pisa, head to Lucca. My friends and I made a day of it because we knew we would only be in Pisa for the Leaning Tower. Lucca is a quaint and gorgeous little place that is less crowded than Pisa, and is still surrounded by its city walls. Its walls are unique compared to other Italian cities because they are thick enough to have a walking path and trees on it, like so:

I hate to call Pisa a tourist trap, but that is exactly what it is. There are a lot more cities throughout Tuscany that are less crowded, more beautiful, has better food, and attractions that are far better than taking a quick picture with a tower that leans.

What are your favorite cities in Tuscany? How do you feel about Pisa and its leaning tower? Comment below!
